Paris, 1957

It started with a lens

Roger Pouilloux, a Paris optician who loved to ski, created the Skilynx: a mineral glass lens that sharpened contrast on the mountain when the light went flat.

He gave a pair to the French skier Jean Vuarnet, who wore them to downhill gold at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. The two went into business together, and the brand has carried his name ever since.

Sixty years on, Vuarnet still makes its own lenses in France.

How it's made

Mineral glass, made in France

Most sunglasses today have plastic lenses. Vuarnet's are mineral glass, and Vuarnet has made its own in France since 1957. Glass is the harder material to work with, and the better one to look through.

Clearer

Glass gives a sharper, truer view than plastic, with less distortion at the edges.

Harder to scratch

It stands up to sand, salt and years of being tossed in a bag, which is why a good pair lasts.

A lens for the light

Skilynx for flat light, Polarlynx to cut glare off the water, Pure lenses for everyday clarity.

Where it comes from

Made for the mountain

Vuarnet's first frames were built for skiers and climbers, for snow and glare at altitude. The Glacier, with its round lenses and leather side shields, comes straight from that world, and it still looks right a long way from the Alps.

Gulf light, French glass

Made for snow, just as good on the water

Glare off the snow and glare off the Gulf are the same problem. A polarized glass lens takes the shine off the water and keeps the colour true, which is why Vuarnet feels so at home here.

In the eighties, “it's a Vuarnet day” meant a sunny one. In Naples, that's most of them.
